Mucking out a pond isn’t a pretty sight and the smell can be worse. But if you want a healthy pond and healthy fish, it’s necessary every few years. Over time, sediment, leaves, and decomposing organic material settle on the bottom and slowly build up. That buildup can reduce depth, fuel algae and weeds, and rob the water of oxygen, which then, stresses the fish and turns a pond into a swamp. A proper clean out removes that sludge, restores depth, and helps the pond function the way it was intended.
